Milkweed Sale Is a Big Success

Alliance Partners, Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy |

The Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) / Northwest Federal Credit Union (NWFCU) Milkweed Sale on Saturday, June 26 was a great success with 85 people purchasing 700 plants.

Loudoun Wildlife is proud to continue to partner with NWFCU to promote the importance of planting milkweed to help save Monarch butterflies.  Milkweed leaves are the only food source for Monarch caterpillars, and the flowers attract a great number of pollinators with its copious amounts of nectar.

This year for the first time, we offered four varieties of milkweed: Butterfly Weed, Common Milkweed, Swamp Milkweed and Whorled Milkweed on a pre-order basis.  We sold 650 plants via our online store, and the remaining 50 plants were purchased onsite.

The sale is usually held in-person at the NWFCU Leesburg branch where, in addition to the Milkweed, Watermark Woods native plant nursery offers a variety of native plants for sale.  The sale was not held in 2020 due to COVID, and this year we changed the format due to ongoing COVID concerns.  We hope to return to the in-person sale format in 2022.

Many thanks to NWFCU for continuing to partner with us to help raise awareness of the important role Milkweed plays in the lives of not only Monarchs but all pollinators.  We would also like to thank Watermark Woods Native Plant Nursery for helping us obtain all the plants and, last but not least, many thanks to all the LWC and NWFCU volunteers that helped make this sale a success.
