Writing in Nature: The Stream

The August 7 Writing in Nature workshop may be the best one ever. We had a group of 15 to 16 people, and it was lively. With the necessity of changing our location from the gatehouse in the future, there was lots of talk about where we might go after January, and lots of enthusiasm about keeping going. Workshop leader Nancy Morgan had chosen the little stream behind the gatehouse as the topic because she thought the group would miss it most of all. She checked it out on Tuesday and it was medium full. On the day of the workshop, there was not one drop of water — how embarrassing! However, participants found so many things to write about: seeing the bottom so clearly without the water, the rhythms of nature are not in our control, and the animals that had likely dug down in the leaves and mud to survive until their ride returned. There were many more, truly eloquent responses, and everyone was delighted by the challenge. It was a great workshop! And meanwhile, the cicadas were roaring overhead as if to say, “We’re here. Write about us.” And some did.
The next Writing in Nature workshop will take place on Thursday, September 4.
