Writing in Nature: Flow
The April 4 workshop shifted from its usual location at the Gatehouse to the Vaughn Room in the Carriage House due to repairs on the nearby bridge. Twelve participants engaged in the topic of flow as interpreted by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in his book, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience. We wrote about and discussed moments in our lives that we were so intensely engaged and focused, we lost all awareness of the world around us. A poem by Mary Oliver set the stage for our discussion.
Taking the concept of total sensory immersion, we looked to nature to recreate the state of rapture, then returned to share our observations and experiences. As always, our findings overlapped, reinforcing the value of writing in community.
