Volunteer Spotlight: Rick Entsminger
Rick has “had a lifelong interest in the outdoors, nature, conservation, travel, hiking, and camping” and has been a Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy member since 2013. Rick began volunteering with our Stream Monitoring Program’s Salt Watch and chemical monitoring in 2022 and spent a season as a Bluebird Nestbox Monitor too.
Rick told us he took “an early retirement during the first year of Covid, 2020, that allowed me time to join the 2022-23 Virginia Master Naturalist class. I am now a certified Virginia Master Naturalist.” He also volunteers at the Hal & Bernie Hanson Park Nature Center where he assists leading nature hikes for interested visitors. Rick said his “typical hike group includes three parents and nine children with the usual age range 0 to 6. So, my hikes are typically kid hikes which I absolutely enjoy.”
Rick’s favorite thing in nature is “probably hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I enjoy being in the mountain environment coupled with the physical challenge of hiking.”
Many thanks to Rick, and to all our volunteers, for helping make Loudoun a place where people and wildlife thrive together.
