Multitudes of Cedar Waxwings Seen During Walk at Sweet Run

Twenty-two birders enjoyed a spectacular, unusually warm mid-fall morning at Sweet Run State Park on October 28. The walk was led by John Denice, Anne Ellis, and Mary Ann Good and ably assisted by Larry Meade. Many of the participants were either new to birding or new visitors to Sweet Run and were treated to lots of activity. At the Wortman pond, we began to see the first of the multitudes of Cedar Waxwings that we continued to see, enjoying stunning views of many flocks lit by the sun as we worked our way through the DeMory meadow. It was slow going through the meadow, as the birding was nonstop and buzzing with activity. Besides Field, Song, White-throated, and a lone Savannah Sparrow, we enjoyed watching the activity of four Palm Warblers, four Eastern Phoebes, and the first few of nine Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Avian activity definitely slowed as we entered the woods and completed the Farmstead Loop, enjoying the sun on falling leaves and some interesting finds for Walk for Wildlife.

The complete list of birds can be viewed on eBird at: https://ebird.org/checklist/S153242983.
