2024 Birdathon Team Summaries

This is a terrible photo as it is from so far away. It is also wonderful in that it shows a pair of surf scoters which haven`t been seen in Loudoun County since 2012, with only one additional record (back in 1997). While every day is a good day birding, this day was particularly satisfying. I had seen surf scoters before but only on the coast so this was a rare occasion and just the thing to keep the excitement going! Unfortunately I discovered them late in the evening and only a few other birders were able to see them. By morning the scoters had moved on. I`ll be participating in the loudounwildlife Bird-a-thon this year for the first time. We`ll be trying to see as many species of birds in Loudoun County in a 24 hour period. Our annual Birdathon kicks off this Saturday, and we have a full slate of bird walks and events for you to Celebrate Birds from April 20 until May 19.
Our first event is on April 19. Join us for Merlin Bird ID Trivia at Old Ox Brewery at 7:00 pm!

Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy Birdathon complete for our team the Tanagers at Heart! Almost 30 hours out walking and looking for birds over two days. 6am to 8pm each day. The weather was beautiful on day one and rained basically non-stop on day two but we passed our original goal, getting lucky with two rare birds stopping in the county and adding to our count! Final numbers to come when the Birdathon is completed by all teams! #birds #birdathon #birding #birdwatching #birdmigration #loudouncounty #lwcbirdathon #lwcbirdathon2024
